Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Child car seats can be passed down as your family grows, but did you know they don’t last forever?

Here are four reasons to toss an old car seat:
  • The expiration date has expired – most seats are labeled with a date after which they should no longer be used based on the expected life span of various components.
  • It’s been in a moderate to severe crash. Most seats can survive a minor crash, but if there were injuries or the airbags deployed, the car seat should be replaced.
  • Your child has outgrown the seat. Move up to the next size if your child reaches the weight and height limits.
  • And finally, toss the seat if it’s damaged. Check for wear and tear, cracks or loose parts.
