Kristin from Onondaga writes with the following challenge:
"I have a five year old girl that is over weight (89lbs and a little over 4' tall) and I am trying to find programs I can get her in either on the weekends or after 5pm on weekdays! She loves to dance and sing but I haven't found a place where I can get her in! Please if you know of anything place that would be good for her, I would be open to hearing what you suggest!! I am trying to help her be healthy early before it gets too late! Thank you for your time."

We shared Kristin's note with our friends at SUNY Upstate Medical University's "Health Connections," and they offered the following guidance:

University Hospital has a program that might be helpful:http://www.upstate.edu/gch/services/obesity/

Have Mom call MD Direct at: 464-4842 for more information.

Mom might also check out Syracuse Parks at:

The Food Bank of CNY has a program:

Online has a site for fun:

As always, the best information relative to a Patient`s care comes from their personal physician who is aware of health history. I would encourage Mom to write out questions and concerns to bring to her next Pediatrician appointment, or to call the office and speak to the nurse.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Jeanne B., B.S.RNC

What Now?
Jane from Clay worries about her son's health. "For the past 2 yearly visits to the pediatrician, I have asked for help with my son's weight. He is now 8 years old, is 4"1" tall and weighs 94 pounds. Each time I have been told to 'increase his activity.' How? He is not a 'joiner,' and the few activities he likes are once a week for 7 weeks at a time. It's not working - now what?"
