Rome (WSYR-TV) – The Attorney General’s office announced on Wednesday that it is suing the owner of a “head-shop” chain in Central New York.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office issued a release stating that it will sue John Tebbetts III, who owns Tebbs Head Shop locations in Syracuse, Oneida, Utica, Cicero, Watertown, and Herkimer.

According to the AG’s office, an undercover investigation discovered that Tebbs reformatted synthetic drugs like “bath salts” as “glass cleaner.” They say the store held a competition to rename the substances.

Tebbs was one of numerous head-shop chains targeted in a nationwide crackdown on synthetic drugs called Operation Log Jam late last month. In Central New York, Federal and local law enforcement agents raided Tebbs as well as the 420 Emporium chain.

The AG says that Tebbs is violating the state’s labeling laws by selling designer drugs, which are labeled “bath salts” and “synthetic marijuana.”

The AG’s office used similar language when it announced a lawsuit against a head shop on Syracuse’s North Side, Twisted Headz.

The move is part of a general crackdown the AG’s office has launched against a drug that has increasingly been linked to bizarre and violent behavior in Central New York and beyond.
