Solvay (WSYR-TV/AP) - Police say a man who held off police in a Solvay neighborhood for 16 hours is dead after he shot himself in the head.

Police say Joseph Schell told police that he didn't want to go back to jail then shot himself inside the home on Conklin Street. Schell was rushed to the hospital in very serious condition. The standoff ended at about 6:20 Wednesday morning.

They indicated that he died about two hours later.

Solvay Elementary School and the Solvay Public Library were locked down when the situation developed on Tuesday. All students were released just before 4 p.m. The library was closed throughout the evening.

Police say that Schell allegedly held his girlfriend at gunpoint for several hours in a residence on Warners Road in Camillus on Monday afternoon. Schell was alone in the home as the standoff developed on Tuesday.

Solvay Police Chief Richard Cox told NewsChannel 9 that his officers were looking for Schell at the Conklin Street residence when a person fired multiple shots at them. One of the shots struck a home across the street. No one was injured.
