Elbridge (WSYR-TV) - The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department has identified the second victim killed in Wednesday's deadly crash along Route 5 in Elbridge as 76-year-old Marlene Demay.

Also killed in the crash was Ronald Mabb, 68, who was driving the vehicle when it was hit by a tractor trailer driven by Kevin Lamay II, 26. Both Mabb and Demay are from Elbridge, but their relationship is unclear.

The Kia in which Mabb and Demay were riding burst into flames after the tractor trailer drove up onto it.

Witnesses to the deadly crash report hearing Mabb and Demay calling out for help while they were inside the burning vehicle. Accident investigators, however, have not yet determined whether they died on impact or in the fire.

Witness Jeremy Soutar insists he heard Mabb and Demay's cry for help from inside the burning vehicle. He says it was moment he will never forget. "[We] turned around to see tractor trailer had run over the top of the car. The car rolled three times and engulfed in flames," he said. "Everyone ran toward the car screaming 'get them out!'"

Soutar says his first instinct was to run to the nearby Dollar General store for fire extinguishers. "I passed it off to two guys who were brave enough to get close to the car. They were almost in the flames - trying to put it out," he said.

Despite everyone's best efforts, Mabb and Demay were both killed.

"It really appears to us that the impact of the accident probably killed them before the car caught on fire," said Sheriff Kevin Walsh.

The damage was so severe, Sheriff Walsh says, rescuers had to pry the car apart with the jaws of life. But Soutar insists, "they did not die on impact. They were crying for help."

Michael Lockwood, 31, of Wolcott, was also injured when the burning Kia was pushed into his pickup truck. Lockwood's passenger was not injured.

The Sheriff's Department estimates that their investigation into the accident will take nearly two weeks, due to the magnitude of the crash. An autopsy will be done on both Mabb and Demay to definitively determine the cause of their deaths.

Sheriff Kevin Walsh says he expects Lamay to face charges. He says that the tractor trailer driver should have seen the Kia, which had stopped on Route 5 because of an earlier accident. "The truck driver was responsible to see actions of vehicles in front of him. And he had a good mile of visibility to see those cars slowing or stopping in the road in front of him - absolutely no excuse for that," he said.

At the least, Lamay could face a charge of following too closely, but that won't be determined until the investigation is complete. So far, police have ruled out driving while under the influence or distracted driving while talking on a cell phone as possible causes for Lamay driving into the back of the Kia.

Elbridge (WSYR-TV) - Two people are dead as a result of a second serious crash along Route 5 in Elbridge. The crash happened around 2pm in front of the Dollar General along Route 5.

The County Sheriff's Department says that a Casa Imports tractor trailer driven by Kevin Lamay II, 26, of Rome, failed to stop when he approached traffic that was slow moving near the scene of the day's previous accident. Lamay's truck reportedly drove up onto a Kia driven by Ronald Mabb, 68, of Elbridge, which burst into flames and was then pushed it into a pickup truck driven by Michael Lockwood, 31, of Wolcott. Marlene Demay, 76, of Elbridge, was a passenger in the Kia. Both Mabb and Demay were pronounced dead on scene.

The pickup truck was damaged, Lockwood was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Lockwood's passenger, John Barringer, 33, of West Winfield, was not injured.

The crash took took place just a few hundred yards from the second accident of the day, which took place at the intersection of Sandbank Road and Route 5. Traffic had reportedly accumulated while State Police attempted to clean up after that accident. County Sheriff Kevin Walsh says a tractor trailer then apparently hit the victim's Kia. "Tractor trailer evidently did not observe the fact that the pickup truck and the Kia stopped in the road waiting for traffic to move. He drove right up on the back of the Kia. That car spun around and hit the white pickup truck," he said.

Witness Rich O'Hara blamed the fatal accident on poor supervision by Sheriff's Deputies. "There was no police officers directing traffic to slow down when you're going to have many a people rubber necking going by...it's 55 miles per hour," O'Hara said.

The Sheriff's Department said that, as far as they know, traffic was being handled properly, but that will be a subject of the investigation.

The area was closed to traffic until about 7:50 p.m. while members of the Accident Investigation Team completed their work.

The first crash of the day occurred in front of Rolling Hills trailer park and sent four people to local hospitals.
