Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- A man, who police say was either in his late teens or early 20s, was found dead outside at an apartment complex on the city’s East Side Wednesday night.

Police say the man was found near the back door, between two buildings at the Parkside Commons between East Fayette Street and Dakin Street.

The call for help came in to police as a “man down” just before 7 p.m. By the time crews arrived, it was too late.

“The male appears to be in his late teens. We don't have an exact cause of death right now, but it’s obvious to us that he has trauma that is caused by some type of homicide,” Syracuse Police Sgt. Tom Connellan told NewsChannel 9.

As word spread, a large crowd formed, hesitant to move back as police surrounded the block with crime tape, ready to begin a long night of work, collecting evidence.

"Obviously this is a very emotional matter, especially when you are talking about such a young victim and emotions run high during those times and we try to be sympathetic to that, but we also have to preserve a crime scene and we have to do our investigation here,” Sgt. Connellan continued.

Police have not released the victim’s name or exact cause of death. They’re asking any witnesses to come forward. If you have any information that could help police in this case, call 442-5222.
