Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse Police have charged a teen with murder in a South Side shooting death late last month.

Demetrius Hackett, 19, faces charges of second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the death of Chance Gathers.

Police say Gathers, 33, was standing in front of 157 Kenmore Ave., Syracuse, on the afternoon of March 23 when he was shot multiple times in the back.

Police Chief Frank Fowler said the shooting was in retaliation for the shooting of Hackett’s brother - 23-year-old Pierre Hackett - on Merriman Avenue in the city, a case which remains unsolved.

Police say Hackett became a suspect early in their investigation and he had plenty of chances to turn himself in, but did not. Finally, police sent a warrant squad to arrest him on Monday night.

Police say a weapon has not been recovered and the investigation is continuing.

Hackett is being held in jail without bail after an arraignment Tuesday morning. He is due back in court April 13.
