Geddes (WSYR-TV) – Although the city is located in the center of New York State, a viewer is wondering why Syracuse is the annual host of the State Fair.
The State Fair started in 1841 in an effort to promote agriculture and household goods in New York State.
The Salt City was selected as its first home mainly because it was at the center of the state’s farming industry, but also because it was a centralized port in the Erie Canal.
The Fair moved around after that, traveling to different cities including Albany, Rochester, and Poughkeepsie.
Syracuse became the annual event’s permanent home in 1890 because the city was believed to be the hub of economic development in New York. If you have a question for the Your Stories team, call (315) 446-9900 or email YourStories@9wsyr.com
