Oswego (WSYR-TV) – The Oswego City School District announced on Monday that it will suspend varsity girls basketball coach Phil Reed for the remainder of the winter sports season.
District officials delivered a release on Monday afternoon indicating that they had completed an investigation into complaints against Reed.
The district acknowledged that the suspension came with “considerable disappointment.” The district also stressed that it encourages its student athletes to make a concerted effort whether at practice or on the field of play:
The Oswego City School District encourages hard work and dedicated efforts from coaches and student-athletes both in practice and under game conditions.
Coach Phil Reed has served Oswego’s student-athletes throughout his coaching career. However, his services will not be required for the remainder of the 2011-12 basketball schedule.
Oswego coach on leave from coaching after parent complaint
Feb. 3, 2012
Oswego (WSYR-TV) – The Oswego girls varsity basketball coach has been placed on leave from coaching as the district investigates a complaint lodged against him by a parent.
Philip Reed has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation, said Oswego City School District Superintendent Bill Crist in a statement.
A viewer who contacted NewsChannel 9 spelled out a list of complaints about how the girls basketball team was admonished for mistakes with a note from their coach. The person, identified as a concerned parent, said the kids were required to do some heavy workouts in Friday’s practice and their claims went beyond that. The school district could not confirm those details.
We reached out to school board members and left messages to find out what parents should know about this case, considering that a coach is under investigation. At this point, officials have not offered any specifics.
Superintendent Crist released the statement through spokesperson Bill Foley. Foley did not know if the team would practice Saturday.
