DeWitt (WSYR-TV) - They walked into a pro shop, and DeWitt police say they acted like a couple of pros by distracting employees to steal expensive golf clubs. The crime was all Caught on Tape and police are asking the public to help identify the suspected thieves.
The surveillance video from the Drumlins Golf Pro Shop shows the two suspects doing some shopping in the pro shop around 4:00 on the afternoon of Wednesday May 11. Police say that while one of them is distracting the employee at the counter another walks out the door with expensive clubs under his arms. Police say crooks using this method walk in with a plan and usually a story.
"Today he brought in a broken club with him asking what it would cost to get it repaired, how long it would take," said Assistant Golf Pro David Midgley. "He would occupy me behind the counter and the other individual is on the other side of the shop, looking around."
The known stolen items include a Titleist 910 D2 Driver valued at $399.99 and a Fairway Wood valued at $249.99.
Employees spotted one of the two men again on Tuesday. This time, nothing was taken, but the video quality is a little better.
If anyone has any information about the men on the tape, please call DeWitt police at 425-2333 or email their tip line. Police would appreciate the help and so would the staff of Drumlins.
"We've contacted other golf shops," Midgley said. "Just getting the word around, what they're doing and what they look like."
