DeWitt (WSYR-TV) -- DeWitt Police are putting you “On the Lookout” for a man caught on camera – not once, but twice – stealing high-end organic steaks from the freezer section of Natur-Tyme on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse.
Police say the man got away with nearly $1,000 dollars worth of organic meats.
Surveillance video shows the man enter the store with a rolling suitcase, something owners say should have been their first red flag.
The man is out of sight when he packs his suitcase with the steaks from a freezer in the back corner of the store, but he can be seen scoping out his getaway.
He then strolls right out, walking by customers and employees as he exits through the entrance-only doors.
“I’m not naïve to think that we don’t have shoplifting in our store, but that was just such a brazen violation; it was very painful to watch,” said Natur-Tyme owner Wendy Meyerson.
During the first theft, the meat was kept out of sight, but then store employees realized they were in a blind spot, so they moved them to an area where the camera would have a clear line-of-sight.
The move didn’t stop the thief from returning one week later.
With customers all around, the suspect grabs the first handful of meat and brings it back to his suitcase -- out of sight.
“You’d say, okay, that was pretty gutsy, but then he decides to go back five more times,” said Andrew Fox, owner
Five times he grabs locally produced organic lamb chops, Delmonicos, strip steaks and filet mignon; some of the most expensive items in the store. He even reaches deep inside the freezer to grab the steaks in the back.
He was in the store for a full ten minutes.
“It’s a slap in the face and we’d like to say that we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing but we’re going to be a lot more consistent looking for individuals trying to take advantage of us,” said Fox.
Store employees will be getting re-trained to stay on the lookout for shoplifters.
