ONONDAGA, NY (WSYR-TV) – Onondaga County Sheriff Deputies have arrested a man from the Town of Clay in connection with a robbery and assault at a Nice N Easy store in April.
Deputies say Michael O’ Cleary entered the Nice N Easy store located at 4269 Fay Road in the Town of Onondaga and assaulted the store clerk with a baton like club before stealing the money from the cash register drawer. The clerk sustained a head injury and was taken to the hospital.
Detectives investigating the robbery, reviewed the store surveillance camera and were able to determine the make and model of the suspect's car.
Deputies conducted a traffic stop and noticed the vehicle matched the description of O’Cleary’s.
He is charged with the felonies of robbery in the 1st degree, assault in the 2nd degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd degree.
O'Cleary is scheduled for an arraigned Sunday in the Town of Onondaga Court.
Caught on Tape: Reward offered for robbery and assault suspect
Onondaga (WSYR-TV) - A reward is now being offered to help catch the man who brutally attacked a clerk as he robbed a convenience store in the Town of Onondaga. Detectives are also releasing new surveillance video because they hope it will lead to the tips that will help solve the case.
The president of Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Despite good surveillance photos, his identity remains a mystery.
The man is no taller than five-six, 150 pounds, probably in his 40's, with shoulder length brown hair and a goatee.
The new clue, released Thursday exclusively to NewsChannel 9, is surveillance video of the car the suspect drove on the night of April 15. It's a silver, four-door sedan, probably a late '90's model. It also appears that the mystery man wasn't alone.
"It does appear as if there is a passenger," said Detective John Seeber of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. "We do see some movement after the driver exits the vehicle."
Detectives say this robbery was planned. The suspect spends a good amount of time in the store, during an initial visit. Then, he returns a half hour later, with his hair tucked into his Pittsburg Steelers knit cap and wearing black gloves. That was when he attacked the store clerk with a club.
"The suspect doesn't even demand anything. He goes right at assaulting the store clerk, then he demands the money," said Det. Seeber.
Nice N Easy owner, John MacDougall, says his employee is doing okay. In fact, she insisted on returning to work the next day, because she wanted to make sure their Easter egg hunt for the kids, went on as planned.
Anyone who recognizes the suspect, his vehicle or might have any other information relating to this case is asked to call 435-3081.
