Teen admits to beating pawn shop clerk during robbery

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A 14-year-old boy has turned himself in to police Wednesday, confessing to taking part in the beating of an employee at a Syracuse pawn shop during a robbery last week.

The teen was one of four suspects who beat an 18-year-old attendant at New York Valuables on Wolf Street Friday before running off with some cash and merchandise, according to police.

Police say the teen's family members recognized him immediately from store surveillance video we aired on our station. They then convinced the boy to turn himself in.

Investigators now hope the three others who took part in this robbery will follow suit. They say they have good information about who these boys might be, and are especially eager to track them down, given the violent nature of this crime.

“This was really a violent attack,” says Syracuse Police Sgt. Tom Connellan. “This was an unprovoked attack on the store clerk who was in there doing his job and the suspects came in, beat him to the ground, hit him over the head and body with a stool and kicked and stomped him while he was on the ground, and then stole money and cell phones out of the store.”

Syracuse police say the three remaining suspects are also believed to be in their teens.

Police would not release the 14-year-old's name because he is a minor. They say he is being held at the Hillbrook Detention Center.

Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - A group of men attacked a north side pawn shop attendant and stole seven cell phones and some cash Friday, according to police.

Syracuse police say an 18-year-old employee of New York Valuables on Wolf Street came out from behind the counter to help the four men who walked into the store, but after talking to the men for several minutes, one punched him in the face.

The suspects continued to kick the employee and hit him at least twice with a wooden stool.

Syracuse Police say the teen is still badly bruised after the robbery on Friday. They say he is going to recover, but he is quite shaken after what happened.

John Bellavia, the owner of New York Valuables, thinks that the suspects were the same group who recently stole money from him. “We didn't put this store here so that people take advantage of us. They definitely shouldn't have done that,” Bellavia said.

The Syracuse Police Department is hopeful that the security camera footage will help them catch the suspects. “With these new pictures we're hopeful we'll be able to capture these guys and charge them not only with this crime, but maybe we can get them charged with the first crime, where they came in and stole some money,” Sergeant Tom Connellan said.
