Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - His name may sound familiar to folks for several reasons. You may have recently read the story of how the ex-con helped a 14-year old boy, who tried to mug him, stay out of jail.
There's no guarantee now though, that Gary LaTray will remain a free man.
He's in trouble with the law again, and Deputy U.S. Marshals are asking you to be on the lookout for him.
He was the mastermind behind a sensational $2.9 million robbery of an armored car company in DeWitt. In 1989, Latray and his accomplice rammed a U-Haul truck through a garage door of a DeWitt Amsa office, pistol whipped two guards, and locked them in a vault.
With all that money, the two lived it up with limos, prostitutes and champagne, until they got caught, five days later. LaTray spent 18 years in federal prison; he got out in June 2007. He's wanted again, this time for violating his federal supervised release.
When LaTray got out of prison, he got a job at the Franciscan Ministries on Syracuse's north side, and worked as a maintenance supervisor.
They say it's too bad LaTray has gotten into trouble again, because they say while he was here, he was doing a lot of good. “LaTray seemed to be doing well. Probation reports he was keeping up with everything until the last few months. He seemed to increase his narcotics use and as of May, he hasn't been heard from,” said Joe Ciciarelli from the Fugitive Task Force.
If you've heard from LaTray, who is 6’ tall and weighs 155 pounds, the fugitive task force would like to hear from you.
He was living on Syracuse’s north side; LaTray may be living in Northern Onondaga County. The number to call is 473-7625.
