Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Lysander man was sentenced on Monday morning for a crime that led to a manhunt in January.

Thomas Dyer, 50, of 8654 Breawood Drive, building 10 apartment 1C, was sentenced to 10 years in state prison.

In January, Dyer broke into an apartment in Radisson and tried to assault a woman. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office led to a manhunt that lasted several days in the area, searching in the air and on the ground.

He was charged with attempted rape and burglary.

He pleaded guilty to felony burglary second degree in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Attempted rape, burglary charges follow weekend of searching in Radisson
Jan. 31

Radisson (WSYR-TV) - After a weekend of searching that began when a woman reported escaping from a strange man in her own home, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office reports that a Radisson man is charged with burglary and attempted rape.

Thomas Dyer, 50, of 8654 Breawood Drive, building 10 apartment 1C, is charged with burglary, two counts of attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest. He was arrested at his apartment, but allegedly began to resist while in custody at the headquarters.

Dyer allegedly broke into a another home on Braewood Drive late Saturday night, where a woman awoke to find him straddling her. The victim struggled free and was able to flee the home.

Sheriff's Detectives conducted an investigation throughout the weekend, which included a search performed by the Air-1 helicopter. They say tips for neighbors led the investigation to identify Dyer as a suspect.

Dyer was arrested Monday evening and formally charged. He was arraigned in the Town of Lysander Court Monday night, where bail was set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bail. An order of protection for the victim was also issued against him.

Dyer's previous encounters with the law involve two DWI's, the most recent of which was in 2009. He also is the subject of a warrant for unpaid child support. That issue will be handled in family court.

Extra patrols for Radisson after weekend scare

Radisson (WSYR-TV) - When a Radisson resident awoke to find a stranger rummaging through their apartment over the weekend, it touched off a search that began Saturday and wound into Sunday night. The search continues Monday evening, and Sheriff Kevin Walsh says his department will be adding a few extra patrols for the area.

So far, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department will say only that the suspect is a white male, who ran off when confronted by the Braewood Drive apartment's resident Saturday night. The resident also ran from the apartment.

Then, Sunday night, a number of calls reported a suspicious person in the same area. At that point, the Sheriff's Air-1 Helicopter was called in and circled over the development, residents say, for nearly an hour.

For Jacinda Flemming, the series of events are a startling reminder that crime can happen anywhere. "We like to think its quiet over here, we didn't know what was going on, it's not an everyday thing," she said.

Flemming was unaware of the break-in that happened near her apartment on Braewood Drive, but was aware of the helicopter flying overhead, and then flashlights in her backyard after police left. "Flashlights and Air 1, that'll make you nervous," she said.

"You immediately fear the worst, you wonder what's going on," said concerned resident Linda Flemming. "It keeps you awake."

Walsh says the response was appropriate, considering the crime. "It appears at this point something that is random, we don't have any indication that it was a person who was in that particular apartment," he said.

When asked about concerns about the sound of the helicopter overhead, the Sheriff says in a sense it’s a sound that should be reassuring to neighbors, letting them know that deputies are on the case. "It's not a high crime area, but we have no areas in Onondaga County that are crime free," he said.

Sheriff Walsh is asking for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in Radisson over the weekend to contact the department at 435-3081.

Search for 'suspicious person' in Radisson

RADISSON (WSYR-TV) – The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department is using a helicopter and ground patrols in Radisson Sunday night to search for what the department is calling a suspicious person.

At this time, they could not provide NewsChannel 9 with a description of the person.

We have been told that the search stems from an incident last night in the area.
