Syracuse sex offenders may live near schools
In the City of Syracuse, unless it's a condition of their parole or probation, sex offenders can live anywhere they want, even within walking distance of a school.
The zip code with one of the city of Syracuse’s highest concentrations of registered sex offenders is 13208. It is home to 70 men and women who have been convicted of sex crimes.
It is also home to several schools, including the Cathedral Academy of Pompeii, and the Franklin Magnet School on South Alvord Street.
Having no restrictions on where they can live, there are sex offenders living short distances from the schools.
NewsChannel 9 located more than a dozen near the Cathedral Academy, and a dozen living within half a mile of Franklin Magnet.
Children who walk to Franklin Magnet may walk right by the home of several level 3 sex offenders. A man convicted of sodomizing three young children, under the age of 10, lives on John Street, 487 feet from the school.
Another level three sex offender, whose victim was just five years old, lives even closer: just 426 feet from the school.
Some local communities have adopted local laws that bar convicted sex offenders from living near schools and parks.
Tully was the most recent community in our area to pass a similar measure. However, that is not the case in Syracuse.
