Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – The Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be wary when they park, following a surge in vehicle break-ins in fitness center parking lots in Onondaga County.
The Sheriff’s Office says most vehicle break-ins are part of crimes of opportunity and that residents should make sure that they refrain from leaving valuables in plain sight and also lock their doors.
They say drivers should:
- Place GPS units out of sight
- Lock purses or wallets in the trunk
- Park in busy, well lit areas
- Use alarms
Those who find that their valuables have been stolen should call police and reports the theft.
If a credit card is stolen, the victim should call the company in order to cancel the card, the Sheriff’s Office says.
