Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A woman died after being shot on Sunday while standing at a memorial to another homicide victim in the North Side neighborhood of Knaul Street, Syracuse Police say.
The shooting death was the second on the street near Schiller Park in less than one week.
The woman was shot in the middle of the afternoon, police say.
Police said 24-year-old Laquisha Paul was shot while standing in front of a memorial for 22-year-old Karon Cole, who was shot and killed on Tuesday morning. No arrests have been made in that case
Paul was rushed to Upstate University Hospital for emergency surgery. She later died.
Police said it concerns them that Sunday's shooting happened in the same area as Tuesday's homicide and they are still investigating any connection between the two cases.
A friend of Paul's said both victims were also friends.
The suspect in Sunday's shooting is described as a black male wearing a white t-shirt and he had something covering his face.
One Knaul Street resident said people have been visiting the scene of the first shooting all week.
Residents in the area told NewsChannel 9 that they are terrified and want the violence to end.
"Now you have to worry about kids running around and getting shot,” said Chris Ferrer.
Bill Higgins, a property manager and resident of the area, said there needs to be more police activity and surveillance. He specifically said that installing security cameras may help the problem.
Higgins said that if the violence does not end, more and more people will be driven away.
Police said the investigations into both cases are active and ongoing.
