Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Many of our viewers have called the Your Stories line asking about the American Community survey. We’ve got “The Real Deal” on some changes affecting how you answer the government’s call.

The American Community survey is an ongoing statistical survey that samples a small percentage of the population each year.

In the past, you have been asked to submit that survey by mail. However, starting this week, you’ll have the option of submitting your answers online.

This is a major shift for the U.S. Census Bureau, which has relied almost exclusively on paper forms since 1970.

More than three-million households will be asked to respond to the American Community survey online. Households that don’t respond will receive paper surveys.

With the change, the Census Bureau is hoping to tap into a younger demographic that relies more heavily on digital technology.

The measure will likely save money on paper and postage and a greater number of people are expected to respond to the surveys because doing so will be more convenient.
