Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wants the federal government to crack down on the cell phone fraud tactic known as “cramming.”

He’s among 16 attorneys general urging the Federal Communications Commission to adopt stronger regulations to prevent unauthorized third-party charges on phone bills – both landlines and cell phones.

The attorneys general want the FCC to ban all non-telephone third party charges on landline bills. They also want the FCC to require customer consent for any third-party service, whether it’s a landline or a wireless account.

In addition, the attorneys general recommend that wireless customers have the option to block all third party charges from their account at no cost.

Schneiderman says that a recent US Senate report found cramming costs consumers as much as $2 billion each year.
