Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Checks from the De Beers diamond class action settlement are beginning to arrive in mailboxes.
The claims administrator says it sent payments this month to people who bought De Beers diamonds for themselves or for others and filed a claim.
A few Central New Yorkers have called the Your Stories line to say they’ve received checks.
The amount of the checks is not expected to be substantial.
Checks were first distributed to resellers, including diamond jewelry manufacturers and retailers. Consumers are receiving the remaining money from the settlement.
According to administrator’s website, if you filed a claim, the amount you receive is based on:
- The amount you paid.
- The type of diamonds you bought.
- How many you purchased.
- The amount of money available to distribute.
- The number of people who filed.
Letters are being sent along with the checks detailing each specific settlement.
If the amount of your settlement is less than $10, a check was not issued. The claims administrator says cost of distributing checks is too high for checks that small.
The lawsuits that led to the settlement claimed De Beers monopolized supplies, was involved in price-fixing, and disseminated false and misleading advertising.
