Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – From envelope stuffing, to mystery shopping, to putting together little angel pins, NewsChannel 9 tested out a fair share of work-at-home offers and proved many of them are bogus.

There is one legitimate work-at-home job for every 57 bogus offers online, according to ratracerebellion.com, which researches job listings on the net. To find the real jobs, you’ll need to do a lot of homework.

Until you’ve done that homework, never hand over any personal information like your social security number or date of birth. You also shouldn't have to pay anything upfront to make money.

Here are some of the legitimate types of jobs NewsChannel 9 found:

Virtual customer service representatives

A lot of big-time companies hire people to accept in-bound customer calls. Full and part time opportunities are available, but you have to have a computer, internet and phone service to even apply.

How much you make depends on how many calls you take. But normally it's around $8-$15 an hour.

Virtual tutors

Tutor.com hires folks to help students in just about every discipline. You have to be a college student or have a college degree to apply, and you also have to have a computer with a windows operating system, no Macs.

How much you earn depends on what subject and how often you tutor.

On-line Juror

A number of sites give lawyers the chance to "pre-try" a case online to see where it stands in the minds of "regular people."

This is by no means a career. The work is sporadic, and you only get a case if an attorney in the county where you live, signs up for the service.

It also won’t make you rich. Jurors normally get paid between $5 and $30 per case - and one case a month, is a lot.

Other legitimate opportunities include transcription, tele-marketing and even mystery shopping. The important thing to remember is: there are no work at home jobs that are going to "get you rich quick," and any offer that states otherwise is bogus.

If you'd like to work from home, check out some of the companies below. Each has its own requirements for employment and may or may not have jobs currently available.

Also, each of these companies is either a member of the Better Business Bureau or is in good standing with the organization.  Obviously, there are other legitimate websites/companies out there, just make sure to do your homework with any offer.
