Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Anyone who has ever been a Lifelock customer could likely have some money coming their way. The identity theft protection company is settling allegations they made false claims about their services.

Lifelock promised that for 10 bucks a month, it could protect customers from identity thieves but the Federal Trade Commission says that was an overzealous promise that the company couldn't keep.

In ads for the company, the owner gives out his own Social Security number, practically begging scammers to try and steal his identity. The FTC says Lifelock was misrepresenting that its services offer absolute prevention of ID theft.

So, over the next two weeks, people who were customers prior to 2010, will be receiving refund checks for $10.87. It should be accompanied by a letter explaining the settlement, and that they'll have 60 days to cash it.

Close to one million people nationwide will receive a refund check.

A spokesperson for Lifelock says that they made policy changes well before this settlement and are looking forward to moving forward from this.

Statement from Lifelock's Mike Prusinski, Senior VP of Corporate Communications

What policy at LifeLock have changed because of the settlement.

For well before March 2010, LifeLock has been in full compliance with the new federal and state guidelines for our industry that are outlined in the agreement. We have welcomed federal and state efforts to regulate our industry because, at the end of the day, doing so helps to protect consumers from the risks of identity theft.

Significantly, in the course of its investigation, the FTC also examined the company's new products and advertising to ensure that we are in compliance. LifeLock will continue to work closely with government officials to help consumers protect themselves against identity theft and its consequences.

LifeLock will also continue to work relentlessly to educate consumers, support law enforcement, and to work closely with government officials to help decrease identity fraud.

What does LifeLock want people to know about the checks and about the service now.

LifeLock’s mission is the same as that of many consumer organizations – to help protect consumers from the risks of identity theft. LifeLock is committed to educating consumers, supporting law enforcement and working with government officials to help decrease identity fraud. We never lose sight of the reason we are in business.
