Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A scam that used to impact phones on landlines is spreading to cell phones, according to the Federal government.

The call appears to come from a US area code and the phone will usually only ring twice before disconnecting, with a voicemail appearing shortly afterward.

The messages encourage the would-be victim to call and claim a prize, find out about a sick relative, or engage in a sex chat. The caller is then connected to another country and racks up long-distance charges that only appear on the phone bill later.

The FCC is urging people to double check the area code before dialing the number.
