Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Several Central New Yorkers are concerned about callers claiming to be from Microsoft who offer to help remove viruses from computers.

Microsoft says such calls are from scammers. The company rarely makes unsolicited calls.

Oftentimes, the callers will direct you to a fake website and instruct you to download harmful software that will capture private information like passwords and banking information. The software may also enable to the scammers to take control of your computer remotely.

In other cases, the caller might ask for your credit-card number or direct you to a website to enter it.

Microsoft says the best way to avoid these scams is to not trust unsolicited callers and make sure your Windows software is genuine and up-to-date.
