Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Netflix class-action lawsuit over privacy concerns for millions of subscribers has reached its conclusion.
The company has settled with the claimants.
Those who will be affected by the settlement include current or former customers as of July 5, 2012.
Netflix has denied any wrong doing, but the lawsuit claims the company unlawfully kept customers’ movie and television viewing histories on file even after they were no longer subscribers.
As part of the settlement, Netflix has agreed to change its policy.
Identification information will no longer be provided with a subscriber’s viewing history after they have declined to purchase the company’s services for a year or longer. Netflix agreed to pay $9 million as part of the settlement.
The six original plaintiffs will need to split $30,000. The rest of the money will go to non-profit organizations, settlement expenses, and legal fees.
Those who wish to file their own lawsuit against the company must opt out of the current suit by Nov. 14.
