Photos: See the new licenses
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Your next driver's license could look completely different. New York State is implementing a series of big changes aimed at cracking down on counterfeit licenses.
The new black and white license has more than 30 security features, which makes it one of the most secure of its kind in the country.
The most obvious change is the picture and personal data, which are both laser engraved, making them tamper-resistant.
The picture is black and white, which makes it easier for photo comparison purposes.
The license for those under 21 years old will be vertical, to help crack down on underage drinking.
You will get the new design when you apply for a new or replacement license.
Only a few DMV offices are issuing the new licenses today, including the one in North Syracuse. By late September, every office will issue them.
If you apply online, you will get the new license. If you apply by mail or phone you’ll continue to get the old license until October.
You are not required to get the new license before your current one expires and there are no additional fees for the new licenses.Click here to read more about the changes on the NYS DMV website.
