Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Most people have received an email claiming to be from a Nigerian prince asking them for money and help.

For many, the premise seems ridiculous and even comical. So why do the scammers take such an odd approach?

A study by Microsoft’s research scientists found that it’s basically a method for sifting out “false positives.” The scammer wants to target only the most gullible people and doesn’t want to wast time on someone who isn’t going to pay out.
