Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A number of viewers have contacted NewsChannel 9 inquiring about a troubling email supposedly coming from New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles. The email claims that the recipient has received an automated ticket from State Police.

The Real Deal is that this email is part of a scam.

The email instructs the recipient that if they choose to plead guilty to the traffic violation, they can print out the attachment and send the fine to the address in the email.

The email is, in fact, spam mail. NewsChannel 9 brought you The Real Deal on a similar note circulated nationwide that targeted Yahoo! accounts.

The scammers try to make the email look like a uniform traffic ticket from the DMV, but if you open the attached file, you could release a virus.

If you receive such an email, you should delete it without opening any attachments or embedded links.

If you’d like to know what The Real Deal is, call 446-9900 or email YourStories@9wsyr.com.
