Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - National Grid is issuing a warning to customers regarding a nationwide scam.
The customer is contacted and presented with a plan in which the Federal government would pay their utility bill. The program sounds legitimate, but the utility stressed that it doesn’t exist.
National Grid says the scammers are reaching would-be victims through a variety of means – online, over the phone, and door-to-door.
The scammers ask for Social Security numbers and bank routing numbers. After they’ve collected all of the information, they give the person a fake account number to pay their bills. The fraudulent numbers aren’t accepted by National Grid.
The utility is reminding its customers that all National Grid employees are required to carry company photo identification.
National Grid says 140 customers have contacted them regarding the scam.
Anyone who has been contacted or approached regarding the program should call local police or National Grid. The utility can be reached at 1-800-642-4272.
