East Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Verizon FiOS television won’t be available in the city of Syracuse for the foreseeable future, but the company says it is still committed to fulfilling existing contracts with various suburban communities in Onondaga County.

The company says revealing its stages of development in various individual communities puts it at a competitive disadvantage. Spokesman John Bonomo says the television build-outs in the communities that have franchise agreements are on target to meet their deadlines.

A franchise agreement requires that Verizon makes FiOS television service available to 100 percent of a community within five years after an agreement becomes effective.

In 2009, the State Public Service Commission approved contracts in Clay, North Syracuse, Cicero, East Syracuse, DeWitt, Fayetteville, Salina, Geddes, Solvay, Camillus, and Skaneateles and Verizon is obligated to complete its build-out in those communities by 2014.

In 2010, the clock started ticking in Lysander, Baldwinsville, Van Buren, and Liverpool. Verizon must meet its obligations in those communities by 2015.

Verizon has franchise agreements with several communities in Onondaga County. The following is a list of dates when the New York State Public Service Commission confirmed those agreements. Verizon has up to five years after the "effective date" to complete its build-out in a town or village:

(1) Clay (Town) (Onondaga County) – June 18, 2009;
(2) East Syracuse (Village) (Onondaga County) – July 17, 2009;
(3) North Syracuse (Village) (Onondaga County) – July 17, 2009;
