Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The Onondaga County Health Department held the first H1N1 vaccination clinic for school children Monday at Elbridge Elementary school.

Nearly 1,200 kids signed up for Monday’s clinic. To get everyone of them a shot, the Health Department needed to vaccinate people at the rate of 240 an hour. The Health Department had nearly 100 people on hand to do the work, but only 20 of those actually administered the vaccine.

Adrianna Marshall got the nasal spray, she said it felt funny: “It kind of tickled.”

Adrianna's mom, Jill Marshall, said felt a little funny too before she decided that getting the vaccine was the right choice. “I'm always hesitant to pump something else into their body. I wasn't sure whether if was good idea, but it seemed like a big enough issue this year and everyone we talked to has supported it.”

The Health Department says they'll also have enough vaccine for the rest of the clinics to follow.

This is just the first clinic for the Onondaga County Health Department. Dr. Morrow says more than 1,600 students are registered for the all the other H1N1 clinics.

What is H1N1 Flu?

What is H1N1 (swine) flu? An influenza virus, similar to the strains that impact many people during the winter months. Flu viruses also infect many other animals and mammals, as well as birds, and this strain causes a respiratory disease in pigs.
