Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – 9,000 students have registered for H1N1 vaccinations since Onondaga County began registration on Wednesday, but the County Health Department is still waiting for the vaccine.

County Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow has stressed through this entire flu emergency that people have to be flexible. She says she’s still confident it will arrive on time.

If not, she says, they will postpone clinics until the appropriate amount of vaccine does arrive.

Dr. Morrow says that the nasal spray version of the vaccine is more effective for healthy, school-aged children, but already knows she will not be able to guarantee what forms of the vaccine they get. "One week I may have more nasal spray and fewer shots available, next week I may have more shots and less nasal spray, we're really doing this week by week,” she said.

Dr. Morrow says those school districts hit hard by illness are finally seeing a reduction and getting a chance to recover, but that now other districts are seeing it.

What is H1N1 Flu?

What is H1N1 (swine) flu? An influenza virus, similar to the strains that impact many people during the winter months. Flu viruses also infect many other animals and mammals, as well as birds, and this strain causes a respiratory disease in pigs. It is related to human viruses, but influenza tends to stay in its own "host" species.
