Utica (WSYR-TV) – The Oneida County Executive’s office says two more cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in the county, bringing the total number of cases to four since the outbreak started in April.

The State Department of Health now considers the virus to be widespread in New York.

Oneida County Acting Director of Health Daniel Gilmore says residents can take several steps to protect themselves from getting the virus:

  • Frequent hand washing
  • Cover all coughs and sneezes
  • Avoid people with flu-like symptoms
  • Stay home if you have a fever, cough or other flu-like symptoms, and stay home until at least one day after symptoms subside.

Those with mild to moderate flu symptoms should recover at home, but those with more severe symptoms or underlying medical conditions should contact their doctor.

What is H1N1 Flu?

What is H1N1 (swine) flu? An influenza virus, similar to the strains that impact many people during the winter months. Flu viruses also infect many other animals and mammals, as well as birds, and this strain causes a respiratory disease in pigs.
