Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Some people like to say that roll-your-own cigarettes are less toxic than manufactured cigarettes.

But Upstate Cancer Center Director Leslie Kohman says that isn’t necessarily true.

Research shows that the levels of nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals inhaled from roll-your-own cigarettes are often higher because they lack a filter.

Kohman says roll-your-own cigarettes are more likely to cause mouth, throat, and lung cancer; as well as diseases such as emphysema and heart disease.

The best thing a smoker can do is find support to kick the habit for good.
