Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Many of you had hoped ringing in the New Year would cause your ears to ring less as FCC rules governing commercial volume went into effect last month. So, why hasn’t the volume changed you ask?
NewsChannel 9 engineers are working with new equipment to monitor audio levels. With that said, the FCC requires that ads be the same average volume as the corresponding program. So there is some wiggle room.
Also, there are exceptions to the compliance date. A one year waiver can be granted to an TV station or cable operator that shows financial hardship in obtaining equipment needed to comply with the new rules. That waiver can be renewed for an additional year.
