SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - It’s another “Your Stories” success story!

Last week, NewsChannel 9 introduced you to a Cicero man who lost thousands of dollars after H&R Block made a mistake on his taxes.

Edward Thayer fought for months to get the company to pay-up for that mistake, but it wasn’t until our investigation that H&R Block finally took action.

NewsChannel 9 has learned that on Friday, February 8th, two days after our investigation aired, that H&R Block sent Thayer a check for more than $2,500.

Thayer’s tax troubles started in 2011 when he was told by his preparer at H&R Block that he had a sizeable refund, which he ended up getting.

A year and a half later, Thayer got a letter from the IRS that said he owed more than $2,500 because of a mistake on his income tax return.

Thayer paid that money to the government within a four week deadline. He then called H&R Block about the mistake.

In an e-mailed response, an employee apologized and said "I feel so stupid...that's what I get for talking and typing at the same time."

"She said they would be refunding the money we paid to have our taxes done immediately minus some fee, and within two to six weeks I'll be getting my $2,500 back,” said Thayer.

Those six weeks turned into months, until our investigation prompted H&R Block to mail Thayer that check.
