Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The cost of heating your home is variable, but you want consistency in the way you’re taxed on energy sources. You want to know why you pay taxes at some stores, but not others?

Well, it all depends on where you’re making the purchase, there is no state sales tax on residential energy sources and many counties and cities with a local sales tax will offer exemptions on gas, propane, electricity, steam, coal, fuel oil and wood. Communities that do not exempt those commodities from local sales taxes are as follows:
  • Cayuga County
  • Cortland County
  • Tompkins County
  • And the cities of Auburn, Oneida, Oswego and Ithaca
If you feel you’ve been wrongly charged for a home energy source, you should contact the sales tax info center at 518-485-2889.
