Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Time Warner customer who watches NewsChannel 9 recently noticed that when he tunes in, he is automatically directed to the high definition channel, 889.

The viewer said he’s not complaining, but he’s wondering why this has happened.

The company says more and more customers are choosing high-definition television. So Time Warner introduced Auto HD last month to make it easier for its customers to find those high-definition channels.

Your television will now automatically tune in to the HD equivalent of several cable networks and all local broadcast channels, even when you select the standard definition stations. The function can be turned off by navigating through the settings menu.

Verizon FiOS makes finding high definition channels easier for its viewers using the program guide at the bottom of the screen. It will direct you to press C to watch in HD. You hit C at the bottom of the remote and that immediately takes you to the HD equivalent of the station you were watching.
