Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Gas prices are climbing fast. Gas prices are at $3.83 a gallon here in Central New York – that’s up 13 cents from just last week.

Nationally, prices have been creeping up for months, and there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. So, what can you do to get the most out of that costly tank of gas?

First, don’t travel at high rates of speed. Your engine has to burn more fuel to go fast.

Also, check your tires. A lot of cars on the road are driving on deflated tires, which increases friction and decreases fuel economy.

Next, clear out your trunk. Golf clubs, dog food, gardening equipment and anything heavy will slow your car and burn more gas.

Keep your speed as steady as possible and try not to accelerate and brake unnecessarily.

And finally, don’t leave your car idling. If you’re sitting more than 30 seconds, power down.

These simple steps will keep costs down and your gas tank closer to full.

And remember, before the next time you fill up visit our Energy Center, where you’ll find the cheapest places to fill up near you.
