Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A recent Finger Lakes crash involving an Amish buggy has NewsChannel 9 viewers wondering what the rules of the road are for the horse-drawn carriages.
To start, such buggies are classified as “slow moving vehicles” and they’re in the same category as road construction vehicles or agricultural machinery traveling fewer than 25 miles per hour.
The buggies are entitled to a lane like any other vehicle and drivers are expected to use caution when following or passing them.
As for signage on the vehicles, they must sport either a red lantern and reflective tape, or a slow-moving vehicle sign.
Drivers should always be cautious around horse-drawn buggies since animals can change course unexpectedly.
