Sennett (WSYR-TV) - Passing drivers like Val McKenzie want to know what a field of towering poles off Route 20 in Cayuga County is all about.
The land owner, Ben Bergan, tells us they're part of a future hop yard in the town of Sennett.
Hops is grown and used in beer as a preservative and bittering agent.
135 locust poles, which recently went up, stand 18 feet tall and are necessary to allow the crop to grow similar to vines.
Bergan tells us the plants will need to mature and it will likely be two years before anything can be harvested.
Once that happens, the hops will be pressed and put in a pelletizer before it's ready to be sold to breweries.
Bergan tells us this is a new business and he hopes to focus on supplying New York State breweries.
