Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Question
: A NewsChannel 9 viewer wants to know what happened to the cicadas that were expected to emerge last spring?Answer
: Cicadas live underground as they mature and emerge after 13 or 17 years.
Cicadas that emerge in a given year are referred to as a "brood" and are designated by Roman numerals.
The 17-year brood in our area is brood seven, which last emerged in 2001.
So we can expect that the next emergence in our area will take place in 2018.
With that said, there are many broods coming out in different years in different places.
It’s possible our viewer was referring to a brood that came out in Southeastern New York last spring. If you have a question for the Your Stories team, call (315) 446-9900 or email YourStories@9wsyr.com.
