Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- While many birds have flown south for the winter, one of our viewers in Onondaga Hill has noticed an abundance of crows near the city. Why is that, she asks.
Well, it’s a common sight in the wintertime, especially as the temperatures drop. The Northwestern crow is not a migratory bird because it’s able to find adequate supplies of food throughout the winter.
The birds come together during the cold-weather months to protect themselves against predators because there are no leaves on the trees for shelter. Also, temperatures tend to be warmest in the city. It’s the urban heat island effect, so crows will flock there to avoid icy cold temperatures.
