Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices that deliver nicotine through a flavored vapor – and one e-cigarette smoker emailed NewsChannel 9’s Your Stories team to ask where she may and may not smoke e-cigarettes.

Unlike conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are not regulated under New York State’s Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA).

That’s the piece of legislation that prohibits smoking in virtually all work places, including bars and restaurants – individual businesses can set their own policies regarding use of e-cigarettes.

According to the New York State Health Department, “The Food and Drug Administration is preparing to regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products.

They add that while “long-term effects of using electronic cigarettes are unknown, laboratory tests suggest that these products contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals to which users could be exposed.”
