Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Drug giant GlaxoSmithKline will have to dish out $3-billion for a settlement over safety concerns and some popular medications.

All of that money will go to the government, and Joan from Ithaca wants to know why people who took the pills aren't seeing a dime of that settlement.

The Department of Justice tells us this case addressed fraud against only the government.

The company is accused of advertising drugs for uses that were not approved by the FDA. It also failed to report to the government the dangers of Avandia and increased heart attacks.

The Justice Department says anyone who thinks one of the company's drugs has caused them harm can file a lawsuit of their own against GlaxoSmithKline.

Some people have already done that.  Some reports say, so far, the company has paid out several hundred million dollars to settle patient lawsuits.
