Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – You see police officers directing traffic from time-to-time and you want to know when the cost is shouldered by a private business and when it’s at the taxpayer’s expense.

An SU game for example has police officers out directing traffic to and from the Dome. But it’s not the city that pays for that expense, it’s the university.

If a business requires traffic control it pays for the hiring of additional law enforcement personnel. By contrast, when traffic is being directed because of a broken traffic light, accident, fire or power outage, that’s generally at the taxpayer’s expense.
