Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Many students in Central New York are enjoying a week off for mid-winter break. But others are getting a much shorter vacation. Alice in Tully wants to know why the students there get only two days off and not five.
Superintendent Kraig Pritts says an abbreviated break was necessary because the Regents exams are early this year. All exams will be completed by June 20.
The district needs to squeeze 187 teacher days into its calendar by contract.
And by that same agreement, the district cannot bring teachers in prior to September 1.
Pritts says other districts may have fewer days in their contracts. They may also have the ability to bring teachers in before September 1.
The good news is that next year the State Education Department has moved the Regents exams back by a week, so the district will be able to restore a full-week for February break.
