Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Question: The St. Patrick’s Parade falls on March 9 this year, more than a week before the actual holiday, March 17. Why is that?

Answer: Parade President Janet Higgins says they changed the date of the parade because:
  • It’s tough to get pipe bands so close to the actual holiday because many are heading to New York City for its parade on March 16.
  • The Big East Tournament takes place the same weekend. Many who travel to participate in the parade’s dinner, Mass and main event also go to New York City for the Big East Tournament in Madison Square Garden.
