Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Richard Goepfert of Syracuse fell on hard times and was forced to apply for Section 8 housing four years ago.
Today, his application is still being processed and he wants to know what's causing the delay.
It turns out Richard is not alone. The Syracuse Housing Authority says they are backlogged with applications and stuck on those from 2008.
The executive director says they've seen a huge spike in people asking for help. So many that they've had to close their waiting list, which now has 10,000 people on it.
The housing authority receives federal money for only 3,500 vouchers every year to provide assistance.
The turnover of that list is slow. Spots only open up when someone's financial situation improves or if they move away or die. Do you have a question for the Your Stories team? Call 446-9900 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
